Zion Korean Methodist to participate in Yale ISM congregations project
The Yale Institute of Sacred Music has announced that Zion Korean United Methodist Church in Warwick is among seven congregations from across the country selected to attend the ISM Congregations Project Summer Seminar this month. Each congregation is working on a project related to the theme From Generation to Generation.
For the seminar, leadership teams from the congregations gather with ISM and guest faculty on the Yale campus for five days to form a diverse ecumenical community of ministers, musicians, scholars, and other church leaders. The curriculum is shaped by the theme and designed to support the congregations’ individual projects, which build on their particular strengths in worship, music, and the arts; to expand their capacity to serve the surrounding community; and to nurture ecumenical partnerships.
Rev. Dr. Hyuk Seonwoo said three members of the congregation would deliver a 75 minute presentation about the work of the church and its goal to become a “culturally conscious congregation” during the seminar running from June 19 to June 24.
Zion Korean United Methodist Church is located within a block of T.F. Green Airport. Zion congregants live all over Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts. Since 2002, Zion has been the first and only Korean United Methodist congregation that practices the Holy Communion every Sunday. Zion had the privilege of being awarded a Worship Renewal Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship for three years (2003-2006). Zion continues to work together in cultivating the recovery of both the table of the word and the table of the meal, an inculturation of worship, the active participation of the laity, and a bridging of generations. At the Yale seminar, the church will work on their project, called Culturally-Conscious Weekly Communion for Every Generation. The Yale Institute of Sacred Music is an interdisciplinary graduate center that educates leaders who foster, explore, and study engagement with the sacred through music, worship, and the arts in Christian communities, diverse religious traditions, and public life.
